Open Access

What can you do as a researcher?

By publishing your research through Open Access you give it a greater potential audience. This can increase the visibility of the research and enhance its impact.

  • Are there possibilities for Open Access publishing in your discipline? If so, make use of these. A list of Open Access journals can be found, for example, at www.doaj.org.

  • Use the NWO Incentive Fund Open Access.

  • Discuss with publishers the possibilities for issuing a licence for a publication instead of transferring the copyright for it. Go to www.surf.nl/auteursrechten for further information about copyright in higher education and research.

  • If your publication is not Open Access then choose to deposit your (pre-)publications in a public database, for example a repository for your own discipline and/or of your own university. Under University libraries you will find a list of people to contact at university libraries.

  • If you are collaborating with companies then your partners might want to exploit the results of the research. Full disclosure is not in their interest then. In such cases, a careful deliberation needs to be made. Discuss this within your department or institute, for example with the person who is responsible for public-private partnerships.
