Marianne de Visser joins NWO Governing Board

Prof. Marianne de Visser will join the Governing Board of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) on 1 February 2010. De Visser is a neurologist at the Academic Medical Centre, University of Amsterdam and professor of neuromuscular diseases at the University of Amsterdam. She succeeds retiring member Charles Buys.
Chair Jos Engelen: 'Marianne de Visser is an active scientific researcher, and as a medical specialist she is very much in touch with societal developments. Moreover, she brings a wealth of experience in the medical sciences to the NWO Governing Board. She is, therefore, a superb addition to the current NWO Governing Board.'
Marianne de Visser holds various administrative positions, for example, at the European Federation of Neurological Societies. There she has been the vice-president since the end of 2009. Until 1 February 2010 she was vice-president of the Health Council of the Netherlands. From 1999 to 2009 she was a board member of the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development (ZonMw), part of NWO.
De Visser: 'NWO provides opportunities for budding scientific talent and brings science back into society. Furthermore, NWO plays a prominent role in international scientific research. These are subjects I am passionate about. In my capacity as a physician and as an administrator in international boards, I look forward to making my contribution to NWO.'
With effect from 1 February 2010 the NWO Governing Board members are Prof. Jos Engelen (chair), Prof. Franciska de Jong, Prof. Ben de Kruijff, Prof. Cees Veerman and Prof. Marianne de Visser. The Director-General of NWO, Dr Cees de Visser, is the secretary.
