The programme Urbanization and Urban Culture focuses on the changing patterns of both the physical appearance and the socio-economic situation of and in cities. It has the following three thematic clusters:
- urban patterns of economic dynamics and social mobility
- urbanity, urban self-images and urban representation
- urban openness and the public sphere
This thematic subdivision corresponds to accepted views in urban research and policy where cities are treated (1) as civitas, accentuating socio-economic and political actions and human interaction, (2) as topos, focusing on collective and private processes of image formation, experience and interpretation, and (3) as urbs, centring on the material aspect: the production, use and experience of urban space and buildings
Senior researchers at Dutch universities and academic institutions and/or researchers at institutes recognised by NWO. Researchers not connected to an NWO-recognised institute can submit applications in cooperation with academic researchers.
What can be applied for
- Grants for small programmes with a budget of between 350,000 and a maximum of 500,000 euro and a maximum duration of 5 years. Applications exceeding the maximum amount must be co-financed. A small programme consists of 2 or more researchers, of whom at least one is a postdoc. The other grant positions can be taken by a PhD student, a postdoc or a replacement subsidy.
- Grants for short-term programmes with a maximum duration of 2 years. These may be for 2 postdocs or one postdoc and a senior researcher who is relieved of his or her teaching duties for a half or full year.
