Cognition

What is the Special Programme for the Cognitive Sciences?

This programme is closed. For further information on cognition please visit the website of the NIHC.

Problem definition:
In the past fifty years, cognition has become accessible to systematic, conceptual, computer and experimental analysis.
A basic understanding of the relations between structure, storage and acquisition of knowledge, neural function, behaviour and communication is within reach. Communication and cooperation between the most immediately relevant scientific disciplines - including, among others, neuroscience, biology, linguistics, psychology, artificial intelligence - are crucial.
Cognitie

In order to ensure sufficient focus for the programme in its entirety, four major areas have been defined that are receptive to advanced multi-disciplinary research, based on the following objectives:
  1. Neuron to cognition
  2. Unconscious and planned behaviour
  3. Communication and cognition in social context
  4. Organisation and accessibility of knowledge

The programme brochure "Fruits of Enlightenment" provides more detailed information on these topics. You can download the brochure here.

Objectives:
The Cognition programme has six objectives:

  1. Encouraging research on the interfaces of existing cognitive areas
  2. Practical application of cognition research
  3. Improving coherence and interaction in cognitive sciences
  4. Improving training in cognitive sciences
  5. Increasing public support for cognition research
  6. Continuation of cognitive sciences

Themes:
The programme Cognition has no central theme. The programme has five lines of action for achieving the abovementioned six goals.

  1. research
  2. scientific meetings
  3. public activities
  4. educational activities
  5. information provision

Duration:
2001-2008

Funding:
The Cognition programme is jointly funded by:

  • The General Board of NWO,
  • Earth and Life Sciences (NWO)
  • Exact Sciences (NWO)
  • Humanities (NWO)
  • Social and Behavioural Sciences and Medical Sciences (NWO)
  • Technology Foundation STW

Budget
12.5 M €

Altogether the Programme aims at stimulating research, forum activities, education, public presence and information dissemination. In order to support these various action lines, the Cognition programme has opened various opportunities for grants. At the Subsidie pagina you will find more information about these opportunities (in Dutch).
