Wat is het prioriteit programma Sustainable Use and conservation of marine living resources (Sususe)?

Doelstelling
Het NWO PRIORITEIT programma 'Sustainable use and conservation of marine living resources' is gebaseerd op een aanname te weten: wereldwijde problemen in relatie tot het duurzaam gebruik en behoud van levende marine ecosystemen worden veroorzaakt door:
a) kennislacunen van essentiële ecologische processen in de zee
b) gebrek aan een internationaal juridisch regime voor de zee
c) menselijk gedrag gebaseerd op kortzichtigheid en zelfinteresse.
Dit heeft geresulteerd in een 8-jarig prioriteit programma welke gestart is in 1998.

Thema's
Four research themes are investigated:
1. Analysis of the spatial scales over which populations of marine organisms interact, and the possible mismatch with the scales of human exploitation systems.
2. Analysis of the temporal scales of development of populations of marine organisms, and the possible mismatch with the scales of human exploitation systems.
3. Review and analysis of natural and anthropogenic processes that affect marine species diversity.
4. Design of better systems for the exploitation of marine living resources to ensure sustainability, taking explicitly the scales of ecological processes and human exploitation systems into account.

Financiering
Dit prioriteitprogramma wordt gefinancierd door het Ministerie van Landbouw, Natuur en Voedselkwaliteit (0,55 M€), het Ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat (0,36 M€) en de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (2,72 M€).
