Energy Research

In 1996 the Exploration Committee for Energy Research (VCE) concluded in its final report that in the next fifty years a transition from global energy systems to systems that are attuned to a sustainable development of society will become necessary. The committee also advocated that the research financed by the public sector should increasingly direct its attention to this problem. In response the Ministries of Education and Economic Affairs have asked NWO and the Netherlands Agency for Energy and the Environment (SenterNovem) to set up a stimulation programme.

The NWO/SenterNovem programme Energy Research is aimed at promoting high-quality and innovative academic research, in which the development of theories and methodologies comes first. The programme aims to speed up the following processes: improving coherence in academic energy research; fortifying the ties between academic and applied energy research; grounding energy research in regular academic work; creating a fruitful interaction between the various social disciplines in energy research and between social and scientific energy research.
