NIOD launches website about anti-Semitism in the Netherlands
19 September saw the launch of the project website dutchantisemitism.nl. This website is part of an NWO project called ‘The Dynamism of Present-Day Anti-Semitism in a Worldwide Context: “The Jew” as a Framing Model in the Netherlands, Morocco, Poland and Turkey’.

Report on Kick-off seminar CoCooN – Knowledge@work!
On December 15th the CoCooN Kick-off seminar Knowledge@work! took place. During speeches, debates and a lively market event, seven projects were presented to a broad audience of scientists, development practitioners and policy makers.

Professor Thea Hilhorst new member of WOTRO board
The General board of NWO appointed professor Thea Hilhorst as new member of the WOTRO board as from 1 January 2011. Thea Hilhorst is Professor of Humanitarian Assistance and Reconstruction at the WUR, focusing on emergencies and emergency-related interventions in the developing world. Her research concerns the realities of humanitarian crises and fragile states.

Seven CoCooN Integrated Projects awarded
The first call of the CoCooN – Conflict and Cooperation over Natural Resources in developing Countries - programme resulted in the awarding of seven Integrated Projects from the 45 proposals submitted.

16 Fast Track research projects on conflict awarded
NWO awarded 16 from the 47 proposals submitted for Fast Track research projects into emerging, active, escalating or de-escalating conflicts, under the theme Conflict and Security. In view of the high quality of the proposals submitted, the committee decided to award more proposals than originally foreseen: 3 replacement subsidies and 13 postdoc positions. The projects will start in Autumn 2010.

New call for Fast Track Research into Conflict
The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research has launched a second call for proposals within the theme Conflict and Security. The focus of this call is on Fast Track Research into emerging, active, escalating or de-escalating conflict. Researchers may apply for funding to do research while the conflict is 'active' or suddenly transforming.

The Cocoon programme experiments with a new way of working
Water, energy and other natural resources are scarce. How can we prevent the outbreak of violent conflicts around the world - particularly when these resources are becoming even more limited due to climate change? This is one of the key questions of the new Cocoon programme. Professor of Social Geography Ton Dietz (University of Amsterdam) is chairman of the steering committee and enthusiastic about this programme which turns the ordinary NWO working method upside down.

Successful launch of new 'Post-Conflict Justice and Local Ownership' Event Series
On 8 October 2009, the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies launched its ‘Post-Conflict Justice and Local Ownership’ Event series, with a two expert lectures on human rights and transitional justice in Colombia, in collaboration with the Embassy of Colombia. This new Event series is designed to enhance dialogue between international and domestic actors on the goals and ‘local’ effects of justice and the empowerment of domestic legal systems.

NWO invests 6 million euro in conflict research
The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has honoured 11 proposals within the theme Conflict and Security. This will allow 9 postdocs and 20 PhDs to carry out research for 5 years and shall release 8 researchers from their teaching obligations. Their research shall provide new insights into the societal consequences of conflicts.

New Research Programme Conflict and Cooperation over Natural Resources in Developing Countries
The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands have joined forces to launch a new research programme: the Conflict and Cooperation over Natural Resources programme. The first call is scheduled for autumn 2009.
