International Cooperation
International Cooperation: Focus and Mass
Cooperation as well as competition are important for stimulating excellence in research and for gaining groundbreaking results. That is a major reason for NWO to encourage international cooperation. Cooperative ventures allow top researchers and research groups worldwide to strive for innovation and improvement. But there is another reason as well. High-quality research in many cases requires a critical mass of top researchers, numbers of participants/patients, facilities and, last but not least, budget. That's why NWO aims for focus and mass in research.
NWO's activities in the field of international cooperation are resulting in fruitful relations, concrete research programmes and projects, (access to) infrastructural facilities, chances for mobility, and involvement of knowledge institutions and the business world. Cooperation is worldwide, though at present most takes place in Europe.
NWO subsidies are increasingly made accessible to researchers outside the Netherlands. This applies both to research programmes and the open, or as it is more often called, free competition.
