Objective
One of the five components of the BioPartner programme is ‘sowing projects life sciences’ or BioPartner First Stage Grant, which is administered by NWO (Council for Earth and Life Sciences) and the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development (ZonMw). It offers contributions to new companies in the life sciences which are still in their starting phase.

Who can apply

Individual researchers in the service of Dutch public scientific institutes: the universities, Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), DLO Foundation, Top Institute Food Sciences Foundation, Netherlands Cancer Institute, Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, Dutch Polymer Institute, Energy Research Foundation Centre, Delft Soil Mechanics Foundation.

What can be applied for

Subsidy to cover salary costs of a researcher and supporting personnel, costs of materials, relevant courses and the employment of third parties such as coaches, patent experts etc.

When can be applied

Applications can be submitted continuously, but they are assessed in five rounds per year. For the deadlines see www.biopartner.nl, choose BioPartner First Stage Grant, choose Agenda. This programme closes on 1 September 2005.

In case the researcher is not yet employed by one of the abovementioned scientific institutes when making his/her application, he/she must submit a declaration from the institute where he/she will be employed. This must contain the desired date when and the desired conditions under which the researcher will enter into service.

Selection

Criteria

The board who will assess the applications attach great importance to the motivation and entrepreneurial skills of the candidate, who will therefore be invited to explain his/her business plan. The main selection criterion will be the commercial viability of the business plan.

Procedure

During the procedure the subsidising organisation will keep the applicant informed about the progress of the assessment of the submitted proposal. After a proposal has been accepted an advance may be requested after every half year by means of an advance form. The subsidy amount will be determined after the execution of the accepted plan has been completed. The determination will take place on request by means of a separate form.

Budget

Around 3.3 million euro per year. For each application a maximum of 250.000 euro for a period of no more than 2,5 years is available.
